Liberation Day of DNH (Dadra and Nagar Haveli)

In Dadra and Nagar Haveli, 2nd August used to celebrated as its Liberation Day. In Short, Dadra and Nagar Haveli also Known as “DNH”. It was liberated from the Portuguese. The day on which it was freed from the Portuguese rule in 1954 is celebrated as Liberation Day.



As known that, every year the 2nd August was celebrated in UT of Dadra & Nagar Haveli as Liberation Day. Last year also the Administration had celebrated the 2nd August, 2021 on Monday as 68th Liberation Day of Dadra & Nagar Haveli. Liberation Day is celebrated at all Govt. and Private Schools, Gram Panchays and Collectorate, Silvassa with great Joy. On this day, The Hon'ble Administrator unfurl the tricolor in presence of Hon'ble Member of Parliament, Collector, President of District, President of SMC, Vice Presidents, administrative Officers and Other Members. After that Hon’ble Administrator, DD & DNH and  Hon’ble Member of Parliament, DNH  address the gathering. March-past by IBR and Police along with NCC Cadet is exhibited and Cultural programmes of Local Tribal is also exhibited by the Local tribes which Known as “Tarpa Nutya” in Local Language. Most of People are actively participate in this Liberation Day celebration.

About Dadra and Nagar Haveli

Dadra and Nagar Haveli, the Union Territory of India, the region is located in the western part of the Country and situated between the states of Gujarat to the north and Maharashtra to the south. Its capital is Silvassa.  while Dadra is a short distance north in Gujarat. Silvassa is the administrative headquarters of Dadra and Nagar Haveli. The area of Dadra and Nagar Haveli is spread over 491 square kilometres (190 sq mi) with around 343,709 Population, according to Census 2011. There are 72 villages, mainly inhabited by the various tribal communities like the Warly (Warlie), Kokana, Dhodia, Koli, Kathodi, Naika, Dubla and Kolgha. The tribal communities are locally known as Adivasi (which means original inhabitant). Each community has its own culture, traditions and languages and dialects. None of these languages has written literature or script until today.

Liberation of Dadra and Nagar Haveli

Dadra and Nagar Haveli were the Portuguese overseas territories, which remained a part of the Portuguese India from 1779 until 1954.These territories remained enclaves, without having accessibility to sea. These were administered by the Portuguese Governor of the Daman district.After India got its independence in the year 1947, the residents of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, along with assistance from volunteers of Azad Gomantak Dal, National Movement 

Free Dadra & Nagar Haveli

From 1954 to 1961, Dadra and Nagar Haveli existed as a de facto state known as Free Dadra and Nagar Haveli. It was administered by a body called the Varishta Panchayat of Free Dadra and Nagar Haveli,

Despite the de facto independence, Dadra and Nagar Haveli territories were recognized all over the world as the possessions of the Portuguese.

Integration into India

In 1961, amidst Indian preparation for the invasion of Goa, Daman, and Diu, K.G. Badlani, an officer of the Indian Administrative Service was, for one day, designated the Prime Minister of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, so that, as Head of State, he could sign an agreement with the Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, and formally merge Dadra and Nagar Haveli with the Republic of India. The Tenth Amendment of the Constitution of India was passed to incorporate Dadra and Nagar Haveli as a union territory, effective 11 August 1961.

Finally, on 31 December 1974 an official treaty was signed between India and Portugal, which recognised the sovereignty of India over Goa, Daman, Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli. 

D&NH Merge with Daman and Diu

In December 2019, the Parliament of India passed a resolution (legislation) to merge Dadra and Nagar Haveli with the nearby union territory of Daman and Diu to create a single union territory and known as Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu on 26 January 2020. It will be one of the three districts of the new union territory. Now, Dadra and Nagar Haveli is a district of the Indian union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu in western India.
